Lynda Grasso FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
Why did/do you want to be a teacher?
Teaching allows me to help others learn and to watch them progress. I became hooked on the education process while volunteering for summer youth programs as a teenager and while teaching piano lessons in college.
How do you individualize your classroom?
I individualize my classroom by greeting students as they enter the classroom; providing timely feedback on student work; displaying student work; communicating frequently with parents; generating differentiated instruction; and providing opportunities for students to disscuss and collaborate with one another.
How do you deal with disruptive students?
I begin the school year by communicating clear and consistent expectations. Also, I attempt to resolve behavior issues as soon as they arise. I speak with the student in private, to find out what is going on, so that we can find a solution together. I avoid confronting a student in front of others, as this will create a power struggle.
What are your sources of ideas?
My ideas come from everywhere! I get ideas from students, other teachers, administrators, parents, and from continuing education and professional development opportunities. I also read every day: text books, library books in subjects relating to science and education, newspapers, news and science magazines, and trusted websites.
What special contributions can you make to a school district?
I will contribute my passion and energy for teaching and my expertise in working with colleagues, communities, parents, and students, in order to provide a relevant and engaging science education. I also teach academic skills, such as reading in the content area, study skills, goal-setting, organization, and communication skills.
